Below is an interactive table and column chart where you can choose to explore electric power generation in capability of megawatts (MW) by period/year. In 2022, the dominant energy source was natural gas but that is rapidly changing as renewables catch up. Explore other periods to see how different it was historically. For example, in 2005, coal was the dominant energy source and there was barely any wind power and no solar power.
Period | Energy Source | Energy Type | Capability |
---|---|---|---|
2022 | Natural Gas | Natural Gas | 6377.5 MW |
2022 | Wind | Renewable | 5136.2 MW |
2022 | Coal | Coal | 3804 MW |
2022 | Solar | Renewable | 1302.1 MW |
2022 | Hydroelectric | Renewable | 689.7 MW |
2022 | Pumped Storage | Renewable | 580.8 MW |
2022 | Petroleum | Petroleum | 150.5 MW |
